The Trouble with Peace

Thinking vigilant

On thousands of days

Even when there is mostly peace

In sight

*

Surrounding us

Fences to protect us

or them

If we had an understanding

We wouldn’t be

Glaring at the possibility

Of trouble

Like a turn in the road

And oncoming traffic

Or a distant train harmlessly passing

*

The world seems so volatile

In thousands of ways

Even when there is mostly peace

In sight

Right here

*

Surrounding us

People to protect us

or them

If we had an understanding

We wouldn’t be

Staring at the possibility

Of trouble

Like a well-written code

And oncoming traffic

Or an unbreakable chain

Forever lasting

*

The road to the future

Has two sides

And it’s fine

So long as we get there

and

Don’t cross the line

If we can make our turn safely

Or go on straight through

We don’t need to always worry

Or have a negative view

We work hard to beat the odds

and

Don’t sweat the small stuff

Trouble with peace is there isn’t enough

*

In thousands of days

In thousands of ways

Peace is in sight

Within reach, so hold tight

Surrounding us

Confidence protects us

There is no ‘them’

if we have an understanding

We won’t be

Carrying the possibility

Of trouble

Like the heaviest load

And oncoming traffic

That is empty again

And thinking of crashing

*

Trouble with peace is there isn’t enough

There’s way too much conflict

We do need to be tough

But we need more compassion

And consideration

Not fierce disregard

No lack of attention

That comes down too hard

No drawing of lines

Unexplained

that confuse

We need a better understanding

Sharing more of our views

*

The path to the future

May show or hide

And it’s fine

So long as we get there

And share our fair time

If we live and learn when fate leads

And enjoy some times too

We don’t need to always worry

Or have a negative view

We work hard to beat the odds

Stick together when life gets tough

Trouble with peace is there isn’t enough
