Low Notes and High Notes

Whispers of a peaceful day

My window is open

Rain is pattering

Thousand upon thousands of drops land on

Rooftops of the neighborhood

Dated houses, workshops, garages and sheds

Cars parked on the street

Are calm in the early day

**

The green belt of

the forest

Trees and leaves absorb the showers

**

The upbeat snare drum

Rapidly and gently pounding

The water won’t miss a beat

Until it becomes a slow drip

A shimmer

of silence

then expands

*

A quiet buzz of

a sparkling world

As the drops slowly stop

*

A few quick

single-file streams of rivulets run off

some corners of buildings & branches

Hitting a surface just right

*

Ultimately

Petering out

Filtered into

Resting spots

Temporary or

Permanent

Drip

Drop

And

A Final series of tiny abbreviated

Splashes slapping

Like one glistening sizzle

**

Birds respond to the rains final comments

Taking the time

to speak up more

As if excited for the opportunity

**

Flying or perched

Dwellers of the high tree tops

Share shrill whistles and screeches

Happy chirps and chatter

Each in their own separate conversation

Different species

in their own cheerful language and melodies

Signatures of life

Repeating good notes for each other

**

A plane flies high above

Rumbling like kettle drums

Or a bowling ball

Rolling across the sky into the distance

*

No sooner has the jet flown out of range than a train announces it’s passing

Making sure everyone is out of the way

Sounding like low notes

on a saxophone

**

It repeats it’s tones getting quieter as it fades into the distance again

*

On cue

the songs of twittering birds remind us that they have a symphony instead

It was here first and it

goes on

Outside the window

*

When they are near

To our hearts

Where we carry our own rhythm

*

Hope and memories chime in

ever after

Faint or loud as they return
